Xylene is a colourless flammable liquid characterized by its sweet odour and it exists in three distinct forms: meta-xylene ortho-xylene and para-xylene. These three different forms are classified as isomers which means they have the same molecular formula but differ in the arrangement of their atoms. Xylene is not only a product of industrial processes but also occurs naturally in various petroleum products and crude oil. Interestingly the majority of commercial xylene is produced through refining processes that extract it from crude oil making it an essential compound in numerous industrial applications.

It is primarily used as a solvent which is defined as a liquid capable of dissolving other substances in various industries notably those involving printing rubber production and leather processing. In addition to its key role in these sectors xylene is also widely utilized as an effective cleaning agent. Furthermore it serves as a thinner for paint helping to achieve the desired consistency and finish.
